How To Keep Experienced Employees From Jumping Ship

renee for news.jpgAs the economy continues to improve, employees who lack engagement with their current employer are more likely to risk moving to another opportunity than they were a few years ago.  There will always be employees who are disconnected with their employer in some way.  Perhaps they are unsatisfied in their current role, or feel they have no voice within the organization where their management is concerned.  However, in order to protect the organization against attrition which could result in the loss of long-time employees with tremendous knowledge regarding processes and procedures, take a look at the following tips for making sure your employees stay engaged and loyal to the company:


  • Help employees have reason to believe in the organization. Recognize and reward individual initiative.  Demonstrate that you have faith in your employees.


  • Take employee ideas and recommendations seriously.  Encourage management and employees to work together to make things better.  Acknowledge and encourage ideas on how to make improvements.


  • Share information and communicate often.  Engagement begins when employee and employer discuss the big picture to ensure understanding of the business.  Discuss the overall business plan of the organization.  Discuss major clients, how you make money and the financial forecast of the company.  Reveal who are your chief competitors and what makes your business different from them.


  • Trust and encourage your employees.  Ensure management is approachable.  “Good job” and “thank you” should be a natural practice for managers and supervisors.  Working policies and operating procedures should promote a positive connection throughout the organization.  Let employees know their efforts in going the extra mile make a difference and are appreciated.


Employees want to know they are valued by top management through each level of the organization.  To demonstrate employer commitment, collaborate with your employees to achieve goals and objectives, and take personal interest in them as the valued resource.


Leadership is an important key.  Employee engagement must be a commitment from all levels of management.  When the organization’s leaders make every effort to remove barriers, focus on people skills and communicate enthusiasm and appreciation for each employee, the result will be engaged employees at every level.
