CAI Survey Snapshot: What Areas Saw the Most Gains in Employee Satisfaction?

seanwalsh.jpgHave you ever wondered how an employees' job demands have changed over time? Many people do, but never have any raw data to lay out the facts. With CAI's Opinion Survey Norms Database, you can do just that.

 

CAI has conducted Employee Opinion Surveys for more than 40 years now, and over the years a normative database has been established to provide organizations with a data set to compare themselves to. CAI's Normative Database is composed of the most recent 5 years worth of data.

 

With all the technological advancements made in the past decade, it's safe to say that times have changed. Potential employees are now able to conduct countless hours of research on employers and learn everything from the company culture to specific pay rates without even ever leaving their couches. This is obviously a great thing for job seekers, but it represents a challenge for hiring managers.  Attracting and retaining top talent can be tough especially if your organization isn't providing exactly what employees are looking for.

 

Below are the top five categories whose satisfaction levels, according to the CAI Normative database, have increased the most since 2009.

 

  • Communication - 81% of employees in our surveys are satisfied with communications at their company.*  This is arguably one of the most important aspects of any organization due to the fact that everyone loves being involved in and up to date on organizational plans. Top-down communication is a very important part of any business so that employees are aware of organizational goals and objectives. With the change in technological advancements, organizations are now more than ever, able to communicate with their employees and keep them informed. From 2009 this category's satisfaction level has increased significantly by over 14%.

 

  • Job Security - 77% of employees report satisfactory job security in our surveys.  This category has jumped up almost 12% since 2009, and rightfully so. Back in 2009 the United States was dealing with an economic situation and many people were uncertain about the future of their job. As the economy has recovered, employees are feeling more confident regarding the stability of their jobs and how management handles lay-offs.

 

  • Benefits - 87% of employees are satisfied with their company benefit package in our surveys.  Of the 15 CAI categories, benefits has always been a category that has been among the leaders and just continues to rise. Employees are more and more satisfied with the benefits being offered and the way that they are handled. Since 2009, the category's satisfaction level has increased by nearly 12%. With such a high satisfaction level, this indicates that employers are going out of their way to make sure that employees are very satisfied with the way that the organization offers and communicates their benefit programs. Not only are they making their employees aware of what's available, but that employees can easily access their benefit vendors and contacts.

 

  • Opportunity for Advancement - 69% of employees report satisfactory levels of advancement.  Due to the economic bounce back from 2009 this category was another one in which an increase in satisfaction was expected. During the recession, times were tough and there were not many opportunities for employees to move vertically within an organization. With the improving economy, more jobs have opened up and employees have become more satisfied with the opportunities available to them. Since 2009 this has resulted in an increase in satisfaction by over 10%.

 

  • Compensation - 64% of employees are satisfied with their compensation.  Again, as would be expected, compensation is another category that has made leaps and bounds which has resulted in a significant jump in satisfaction since 2009. Over the past few years this category's satisfaction level has increased by just under 10%. The recession certainly had an effect on wages back in 2009, but as the economy has recovered, employees now feel that they are being compensated properly.

 

Times are changing, but focusing in on what employees care about is still one of the most effective ways to attract and retain top talent in your industry.
